The book format is not the only way to get text. But "the end"? Hardison's use of the word "succeeding" suggests that he thinks book culture is over, to be replaced, rather than supplemented by other forms.  Text/information has always come in different formats - angry words in the sand, blood on toilet paper, lipstick on the mirror. I disagree with the notion of "center stage" and "book-centered"culture. I wish. Surely no one would accuse us of being book-centered - even 1989. Not centered enough. Changing, yes. Maybe, inspired by hypertexts and the indeterminacy of Cage or Rauchenberg (where the eye is pulled all over the canvas) we can re-imagine the possibility of the book - of the end of the page - the line break - blank spaces - spine. But, maybe the poets have already been there/done that.
